The research on wearable nighttime erection tracking

Last updated:

Nighttime erection tracking at home is an active research area, and the TechRing has published papers, meeting presentations and several trials underway, including one comparing it with RigiScan.

This TechRing Night Guide page gathers what FirmTech lists, plus one independent study on measuring night-time erections with a wearable. FirmTech reports more than 308,000 erections analyzed, more than 40,000 rings sold and more than 20 studies published or underway, as of November 2026. Those are FirmTech figures, not independent counts.

Has the TechRing been studied?

Yes. A 2025 paper in Translational Andrology and Urology covers the TechRing, and FirmTech has presented overnight safety data at AUA 2024 and ISSM. A head-to-head trial against RigiScan, the clinic standard, has 35 men enrolled. Results for that trial are not yet published.

The independent feasibility study

A study titled Shedding light on night-time erections: Determining the feasibility of ... in BJUI Compass reported: "Furthermore, visual detectability was feasible for 80% of the erections with LRH values and 90% with the temperature output." It shows that wearable signals can pick up night-time erections. It does not evaluate the TechRing.

How accurate is the TechRing?
FirmTech publishes its research rather than a single accuracy figure. A 2025 paper in Translational Andrology and Urology covers the TechRing, and a clinical trial comparing it with RigiScan, the clinic standard, has 35 men enrolled. FirmTech reports more than 308,000 erections analyzed. The research page lists the published studies.
Do I need a sleep lab to measure nighttime erections?
Not with the TechRing. FirmTech says that until now, measuring erections meant a sleep lab, while the TechRing does it at home during sex or overnight. Clinic testing still has a role, and FirmTech is running a clinical trial comparing the TechRing with RigiScan, which it calls the clinic standard, with 35 men enrolled.
Are nighttime erections linked to heart health?
Researchers study that link. Erections depend on healthy blood vessels, and FirmTech points out that penile arteries are smaller than the arteries of the heart, so circulation changes can show up there first. FirmTech also cites a 2024 Urologiia paper on overnight erections as a predictor of coronary heart disease. Tracking is not a diagnosis; a doctor should interpret any concern.
Is it comfortable to sleep in the TechRing?
FirmTech designed and studied the TechRing for overnight wear, and it is made from soft, medical-grade, latex-free elastomer with nothing hard or rigid. FirmTech presented research on the safety of a smart penile constriction ring worn overnight at AUA 2024. Overnight wear can take getting used to, so build up gradually.
Can I use a FirmTech ring with ED medication?
FirmTech says many men use the TechRing alongside other treatments and use the app to see what is working, such as comparing nights on different doses. FirmTech also presented research comparing PDE5 inhibitors, the Performance Ring and both together at ISSM 2024. Talk to your doctor about your specific situation.
Can the TechRing diagnose erectile dysfunction?
No wearable replaces a medical diagnosis. The TechRing gives you and your healthcare provider objective data on firmness, duration and nighttime erections, which FirmTech says can help diagnose and manage cardiac and sexual health issues. Your doctor makes the diagnosis; the ring supplies the numbers between visits.
